Rejoice. Be Patient. Keep Praying.

This Bible verse seems to keep coming at me recently.  Again and again it shows up .  Or maybe it's always been repeating itself - in my morning devotions, in my Instagram and Pinterest feeds,  etc - but I am only now noticing it.

Rejoice.  Be Patient.  Keep praying.

Rejoice.  Celebrate what you have.  Big or small.  Be thankful for all of it.  Even the things that may not typically make you think of celebrating.  Rejoice in the day to day pieces of life.  Find joy in your routines.  Appreciate the things you have and the people in your life.

Be patient.  Things don't always happen when we would like to see them occur.  Things may take time.  When things are difficult, trust that if you wait them out - they will get better.  We're all on God's schedule.  And He knows exactly when everything is supposed to happen.  His timing is always best.

Keep praying.  About everything.  Always.

And never, ever give up.

The Problems With Prayer

I am participating in the Proverbs 31 Ministries Online Bible Study "Living So That", based on the book by Wendy Blight.  This week we are studying Bible verses teaching us to "Pray So That..."
P31 OBS Blog Hop

My prayer life growing up was.. well... religious. Being raised Catholic, there seemed to be a specific prayer for every occasion or situation.  Prayers to be memorized and repeated.  I don't remember often - if ever - praying from the heart.  Just talking to God and telling Him what I was thinking... feeling... struggling with.  I never saw prayer as simply pouring out my heart to him in a free, open way.

I no longer pray those all head - no heart, routine memorizations.  Which is good.   However, it's also left me with what I perceive to be two major problems with my prayer life:

Problem #1:
Now when I pray I have no ritual or routine to my prayer life whatsoever.  I pray whenever and where ever.  I pray when I feel I need to or should.  I pray when I feel grateful; when I am overcome with joy.  I pray when I hear of someone in need. I pray when my heart is heavy, when I am sad or angry, or in doubt.

But not always.  I don't go to God as often as I could - or should.  Just when it occurs to me to pray.  Prayer isn't a regular part of my life. It just happens as it happens. Not exactly a bad thing.  But when entire days manage to slip by without prayer - that's a problem.

In "Living So That", Wendy talks about using prayer triggers.  Things to remind us to pray for a particular person when we see that item.  I love this idea to help remind me to pray for my family and for people I know are struggling or in need of prayer.  I'll be putting that concept into place immediately!

Prayer is about building a relationship with God.  It's about constantly keeping the lines of communication open.  It's about spending time with God and learning to be aware of His presence.

You can't have a relationship with someone you rarely talk to!

Problem #2:
When I do pray, I find it difficult to do so with confidence.  Perhaps it's a leftover result of all those memorized "this is what to pray when" prayers from childhood.  But, I often usually struggle with feeling as if I'm not doing it "right".  I feel like I don't know what to say. Or how to say it.

As if God isn't going to listen or hear unless I say exactly the right thing - in exactly the right way.

"Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need" ~ Hebrews 4:16

When I talk to a friend or family member, I don't struggle with every word - wondering if I am saying it "right".  I just say what I am thinking. Expressing what I am feeling.  Asking for help or guidance.  Telling them what is going on in my life. That's how my prayer should be.

Slowly... oh, so slowly... it's starting to sink in.  Prayer isn't about having the right words.  It's not about being oh-so-eloquent.  It's not some magic turn of phrase that's going to make God sit up and listen.

"He delights in us. He rejoices over us.  Whatever we are doing or thinking, He seeks to be included." ~ Wendy Blight (Living So That)

God wants to hear my prayers.   He wants me to pour my heart out to him - the good and the bad.  The praise and the doubts. Not in some list, form, or agenda.  But straight from my soul to His throne.  He wants to help me through the difficult times.  He wants to hear about the things which bring me joy and make me thankful to Him.

Prayer is about having a relationship with with God.  Opening up an honest two way conversation. Telling Him what's on my heart.  Being in His Presence.  And eagerly listen, anticipating His response. And then thanking Him when the answers come.

Do you struggle with prayer?  In what ways?

Just One, Just This

One day...
One hour...
One minute...
One breath...
One prayer...
at at time
This day...

This minute...
This breath...
This prayer...

Coffee Talk

Think about the people you are closest to.  The people you have the strongest relationship with.  How often to you talk to them? Weekly? Daily? Multiple times a day?

How often do you talk to God? If we want to be closer to the Lord and to have a deep, strong, lasting relationship with Him - we have to talk to Him on a regular basis!

Almost every morning I get up, pour a cup of coffee, grab my Bible, and sit down to talk with Him and to see what He has to tell me today.  Sure, a lot of mornings I am doing most of the talking.  But He certainly has a lot to tell me also.

I tell him what I am up to; and He gives me guidance. I tell Him my concerns and worries, explain where I am hurting; and He comforts me. I tell Him about the joys I have experienced and praise Him for them; and He shows me more blessings in my life. I tell him what I think I want; and He tells me what I really need.

It's like having coffee and conversation with a dear (and very wise) friend.

"In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly" ~ Psalm 5:3

My Love Dare: Day 16

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers ~ 3 John 1:2

Day 16: Love intercedes

It's a basic truth:  you can't change your spouse.  You can't "fix" them.  You can't mold them.  You can't alter them.

All the arguing, manipulating, or demanding in the world won't force them to become someone different.  It will only leave you feeling frustrated and discouraged. (And just imagine how your spouse would feel after constantly being pushed to be something different!)

The Love Dare isn't about changing your spouse.  It is about making the choice to love.  Once that choice is made, there is a good chance that you personally will be changed.  That change will affect your spouse, and he may begin to blossom also.  It won't be overnight, but with the change on your part, nurturing (not nagging!) and prayer - it may happen.

Yes... prayer.  It works!!
No, prayer isn't magic.  There's no "Pray - POOF! - It happens"  It's not a drive thru service.  But scripture tells us that "the effective prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective" (James 5:16)

Instead of dwelling on your spouse's faults...

Instead of grumbling...

Instead of nagging...

Instead of complaining...

PRAY!

If you are willing to change, nurture your spouse, protect your marriage, and let God do His part - you might just be amazed by what happens!

TODAY'S DARE:  BEGIN PRAYING TODAY FOR YOUR SPOUSE'S HEART.  PRAY FOR THREE SPECIFIC AREAS WHERE YOU DESIRE FOR GOD TO WORK IN YOUR SPOUSE'S LIFE AND IN YOUR MARRIAGE.

Sorry readers... once again I'm not going to share details.  I'm not going to share with all of you what specific areas where I am asking God to work in The Man of the House's life or our marriage.  Some things aren't for printing on the internet.  But I am praying... for him, for us, for our family.  And fully expecting to see God at work.
