It Was Nice - While It Lasted

Yesterday morning, after his mommy left for school, the grand baby was all about some cuddle time with his Oma.  Which I was more than happy to oblige.  It isn't an opportunity I get as often as I would like.

He's such an active little fellow, it can be difficult to get him to slow down during the day for some snuggles.  And in the evenings when he's ready to wind down and curl up on a lap - he usually goes looking for his Cpa.

So, of course, I jump at any chance to get some of that sweet little boy's undivided affection.  We spent that quality time curled up on the couch, him watching some cartoons, while I did some work on my tablet and rubbed his back.  It was a wonderful way to spend a cold winter morning.

Then, my not-so little boy decided to drag himself out of bed.  And once the grand baby realized his uncle was home - cuddle time was over.  It was more like: "Oma, who?"

Three Things: I can't hear enough...

There are many things we all enjoy hearing.  And somethings we wish to never hear.  But these are three things I will never get tired of hearing no matter how many times it's said:

1) "You're pretty" - even though I often roll my eyes when the Man of the House says it - and often I don't feel even the tiniest bit pretty and have a hard time believing it -  I love hearing him say it and knowing he thinks it (even when I don't).  I know, I know... I should want to be told I'm smart.  Or capable.  And I like that too.  But there's just something about having the man I adore tell me I'm pretty that I can't get enough.

2) "Oma" - I love love love being a grandma.  And it just makes me all sappy to hear that sweet little boy call me his Oma! He could say it a million times a day and I don't think I could ever get tired of it!

3) "I love you" - whether it's the Man of the House, one of the offspring, the grand baby, my sisters or parents or a close friend.  I mean really... who doesn't enjoy hearing that they are loved? Especially from someone they feel the exact same way about!

Wisdom from Oma

Somedays you get up in the morning and after an hour and a half of doing pretty much nothing - you will be ready for a nap.

Wisdom from Oma

Very few sounds are quite as irritating as that of a 14 year old boy sighing deeply in response to being asked to do some chore.

An English muffin with strawberry preserves accompanied by a cup of hot tea may not be a healthy lunch - but it sure is yummy!

To Be, Or Not To Be: Grandma

As soon as people know you are going to have a grandchild - everyone starts asking:  "What is he or she going to call you?"

Some people cringe away from the word "Grandma"  Like having it used in reference to them will somehow magically transform them into some gray haired, stooped over, ancient granny type.

Whatever...  I don't care who calls me Grandma. It's just a word.  I do have a grandchild, which does make me a grandmother no matter what I am called.

I will confess that I prefer that the Little Guy call me something a little more unique and with a little more personality to it.  Not because I have some deep rooted hatred and/or phobia about the word grandma. Just because I like to spice things up a little.  I don't want to be just another Grandma in the world.

Also, in our family every grandmother has ended up called something different, which helps to differentiate between them. The Man of the House's grandmother is "Grandma".  His mother is "Nana".  My Mom is "Granna"

I have been liking Oma (German for grandmother).   Honestly, at this point the Little Guy could call me just about anything at all and I wouldn't care!
