The Pen is Mighter Than...

Hey y'all... can I be honest about something.  I have a pen problem.  I love pens.  Seriously... adore them.  I have more pens than any reasonable person should probably own.

But I may be putting all those other pens aside and forgetting them in favor of just one pen.

This one...

The Man of the House made it for me.  Yes, you read that correct - he made it for me!

He received a lathe for Christmas and now has a new hobby. He has also turned some pretty rosewood pen and pencil sets.  And he recently took a class on one Saturday where he learned how to turn bowls.  He hasn't made another one yet, but the one he did that day is beautiful!

But.  This.  Pen.

Y'all, how pretty is this??

I loved my pen so much, I asked him to make one for my sister's birthday.  (Which I can now show you since her birthday is has passed...)

Another gorgeous creation by my gorgeous, talented husband.

My Love

Today we celebrate the Man of the House's birthday.

I adore this man!  He's so much more than just my husband.  He's my best friend, my rock, my biggest supporter, my fellow explorer/traveler, and my heart's joy.

Happy Birthday to the love of my life!

The Happiest Birthday Wish

Today I wanted to use this spot to wish a Happy Birthday to the handsomest, funniest, hard working-est, most patient, loving man I have ever known: The Man of the House!

Happy Birthday puddin' pop!
(He loves it when I call him that)

Ride Along

Earlier this week the Man of the House had some dental work done and needed someone to drive him home.  Because of this he left his truck there and I got to take him to work the next day.

Riding along beside him in the pre-dawn morning I realized how much I enjoy just being in the car with him.

It's the closeness of sharing the small space with him.

The way he will reach across the gear shift and take my hand or rest his hand on my leg.

Sometimes we will talk. Other times we may share a comfortable silence. Just listening to the radio.

It's just one of those small pleasures which are so very easy to overlook as they happen.  Moments to seek out in the everyday.  Times to savor and treasure.

Oh... and he smelled really good too! :0)

Celebrating the Man of the House

Today is one of my favorite day's of the entire year.  It's the Man of the House's birthday.

I've been searching my brain for a clever post idea to celebrate today.  Last year I did a post from the grand baby's point of view, and the year before I did 41 Reasons why I love him.   But this year, the clever just wasn't coming.

So, I decided to go with the sincere.  Here are a few things I want to celebrate about him on his birthday:

He's a great husband and father (and grandfather):  He works his behind off to support this family.  He leads with strength, encouragement, and kindness. He makes each of us feel valued, loved, and safe.  He is the glue that holds this family together.  And he puts up with me - trust me, that is saying a LOT.

He's capable and talented:  Walk through our house with me, and I'll show you a million things he's replaced, repaired, or rebuilt!  There's rarely a need to call a handy man - I've got my handy man right here!

He inspires me:  His work ethic.  His  kindness and compassion.  His self discipline.  His selflessness.  All things I admire and pray every day that our children have inherited from him.

He is my best friend:  He makes me laugh.  He encourages me to be more than I think I can, to do things that scare me, and to chase my dreams.  And he is there to comfort me when things don't go as I had hoped or when my feelings are hurt.  To help me along when things are tough.  To dry my tears when I cry.

He is the love of my life:  He is the biggest blessing in my life.  The best thing that ever happened to me.  I thank God everyday for letting me spend my life with him.

Happy birthday puddin' pop! I love you!

Three Things: I love about the Man of the House

Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways".  Unfortunately for me - and for the readers of this blog - Mrs Barrett Browning was far more poetic than I find myself to be.  However, I could come up with three simple reasons I love the Mr to share with all of you ...

His humor:  Don't all those surveys always tell us that the majority of women say what they want is a man who can make them laugh? Yep!  And most days the Man of the House can get a laugh out of me.  Is much of my laughter accompanied by rolling eyes and with a little groan?  Sure.  He's got that kind of sense of humor.  But it's still laughter.  Sometimes it bubbles up even when I don't want to laugh.  When I want to be grumpy, or mad, or when I want to just pout about something.  Somehow he can still manage to make me laugh despite my best efforts to be in a bad mood.

2) His encouragement:  He believe in me, even when I have little to no faith in myself.  When I wanted to start an Elsy shop - he was right there telling me to go for it.  When I say I want to write - he tells me to just do it.  (and reminds me that what I do each week on this blog is, in fact, writing.)  While my mind tells me all the reasons I can't.  When  fear raises up to choke my dreams.  He is right there, pushing me past the excuses and cheering me on to take a leap of faith.

3) His physical attributes:  Call me shallow... but the Man of the House is just plain HOT.  And yes, I love that about him.  I don't know how he manages it, but he is somehow even better looking than he was 22 years ago when I married him!

Three Things: I can't hear enough...

There are many things we all enjoy hearing.  And somethings we wish to never hear.  But these are three things I will never get tired of hearing no matter how many times it's said:

1) "You're pretty" - even though I often roll my eyes when the Man of the House says it - and often I don't feel even the tiniest bit pretty and have a hard time believing it -  I love hearing him say it and knowing he thinks it (even when I don't).  I know, I know... I should want to be told I'm smart.  Or capable.  And I like that too.  But there's just something about having the man I adore tell me I'm pretty that I can't get enough.

2) "Oma" - I love love love being a grandma.  And it just makes me all sappy to hear that sweet little boy call me his Oma! He could say it a million times a day and I don't think I could ever get tired of it!

3) "I love you" - whether it's the Man of the House, one of the offspring, the grand baby, my sisters or parents or a close friend.  I mean really... who doesn't enjoy hearing that they are loved? Especially from someone they feel the exact same way about!

That Time I Saw Ben Affleck (sorta...)

I don't know why I was thinking about this story the other day.

No, I take it back - I do know how I ended up thinking about this story.  It started when I was thinking about sin - which started me to thinking about the "Seven deadly sins" - which led to thinking about that movie "Seven", with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt - which caused me to think about how Brad Pitt used to date Gwyneth Paltrow  - and then how Gwyneth Paltrow also dated Ben Affleck - and there we are - right at the story about that time I saw Ben Affleck.  Sorta...

One day, several years ago, I was driving down the main street in our quiet little town.  I stopped at the red light at one intersection and watched this guy cross the street in front of my car.  As he passed and stepped onto the sidewalk I thought to myself  "Wow, that guy looks just like Ben Affleck!"

The next day on the news there's a little story about how Ben Affleck had been spotted around town.  He even left his credit card (or ID, or something which proved it was really him) at a bar downtown.

And that's when it it me.  That dude who looked just like Ben Affleck might have actually BEEN Ben Affleck!  For reals!!

It's probably a good thing that I didn't realize it might actually be him at the time.  It would have been terribly tempting to bump him a bit with the car, toss him in the back, and bring him home so I could nurse him back to health in some Misery-esque type scenario. Which I'm pretty sure the Man of the House would not have approved of. (Mr Affleck and the authorities probably wouldn't have cared for that plan either, come to think of it)

And there you have it.  (after a bit of rabbit chasing) The story of that time I saw Ben Affleck. Sorta...

The Man I Want To Be

My husband (aka: the Man of the House) is the kind of person I want to be.

He's the guy who really would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it.

He's the guy who gives a ride to a couple in the parking lot at Sam's Club because they locked their keys in their car and the spare set is at home.

He's the guy who lets an older man go in front of him in the check out line, even though he has just as many items as we do.

He's the guy who doesn't just loan you the use of his truck, but gives up part of his Saturday morning to help you with whatever it is you're needing to haul somewhere.

He is patient, understanding, and always making excuses for some of the most trying people I know. (I may or may not fit into that category)

He's easy going. He's kind. He's generous. He's funny. (and he's quite good looking too!)

I think I want to be him when I grow up!

Road Trip: Paint Creek

Saturday the Man of the House and I took a road trip up to Greeneville, TN.

The main purpose of the trip was to meet up with his second cousin once removed (??) at the T. Elmer Cox Historical and Genealogical library to share family information and for him to scan some photos and documents she had.  It was a nice meeting and a few hours just seemed to fly while they chatted.  Much to his surprise she ended up sending him home with some family treasures - including a large portrait of his great-great grandparents and a family Bible!

We took the "long way" home through Paint Creek, past Paint Rock, and down the French Broad River through Hot Springs.  We've traveled this way many times through various seasons and it is always beautiful!

This time we found the creek and river were high thanks to all the rain from tropical storm Andrea on Friday.

As I was busy snapping pictures of Paint Creek, I noticed the Man of the House wandering across the road and up a little trail hidden across the street.  I followed him and as I came to the top of the embankment, I was met with this:

The beauty of this little spot just took my breath away!  A tiny stream which feeds into Paint Creek.  Flowing in a small waterfall over moss covered rocks.  A small pool at the bottom.  Everything dim, and quiet and green.  It was simply stunning!

We continued down Paint Creek to where it meets up with the French Broad River at Paint Rock

Paint Rock

This little cross with the spray painted arrow caught my eye and reminded me of  Isaiah 30:21: " Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Pre Season

Disclaimer: If you are the squeamish sort  - just click away from this post NOW!  Seriously.  You have been warned.

One of the few hobbies or activities the Man of the House participates in is playing on a slow pitch soft ball team.  He's the team pitcher.  And looks extremely handsome out there on the field if I do say so... and I do!  Sorry - got distracted.

You wouldn't think a sport called SLOW pitch SOFTball would be dangerous.  It's slow, right?

You would be wrong.

This is what happens when you slow pitch a softball which is immediately hit right back at - your knee!

This happened at his first practice of the year.  The season hasn't even started yet!

I'd love to write more, but I think I should probably run out and stock up on ice packs, bandages, and ibuprofen!

My Love Dare: Progress Report

I’m about one quarter through The Love Dare. Today is day 10.
I have to admit. I was wondering if it was making any difference yet. Had The Man of the House even noticed any of the things I had done as my daily dares?

Yes, I know… it shouldn’t matter. That’s not the point. It’s not about getting attention or accolades. But I couldn’t help but think these thoughts anyway.

Last night I got my answer.

He told me that he felt as if I had been “happier” over the last week or so. That he felt as if I was thinking of him and considering his feelings and needs. And that he appreciated it.

Yah! He can see the changes in me and how I treat him. He feels appreciated!

And that IS the point. For him to feel appreciated, cherished and loved.
