Quiet Time

We are surrounded by constant visual and audio clutter.
Crowds of people...
TV...
Cell phones...
Lap tops...
Tablets...
Social Media...
The voices inside our own heads...

All of this constant stimulation can drown out what we need to hear.  Our heart. Our dreams.  The voice of God.

We need quiet space.  Space to dream.  To be still.  To enjoy the quiet.

I am trying to spend at least 5 minutes each day to just listen.  To the sound of my breath.  My heart beat.  The voice of the Spirit inside me.

I invite each of you to join me.  Declutter your mind.  And enjoy the silence.

And all is well...

This morning started just about 5 AM when I woke up with a nagging sinus headache.  Do you know the sort I mean?  Not terribly painful exactly, but certainly making its presence known with that dull ache behind the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose.  Yeah...  that sort of headache.

I listened to the Man of the House and the female offspring leave for a very early morning run, and decided the cure for what ails me was a strong cup of coffee and some Jesus time.  Which meant dragging myself out of bed to the Keurig and then the couch.

However, no sooner had I opened a devotional and taken a sip of wake-up juice, when the grand baby made an appearance.  Apparently I was not the only one who couldn't sleep this morning.  So much for a quiet time with a little voice insisting that he had something to tell me, he was hungry, he wanted cartoons, and he was not sleepy.

By 6 AM when the grand's mommy and the Man if the House returned, I was headachey, tired, frustrated, and already feeling a bit overwhelmed by the day so far. But I was determined not to let this get the best of me.  Just because the morning had started off a little out of whack was not going to set the tone for the whole day!

One of those mornings when you keep repeating this to yourself..

Even when the Male Offspring had the minor emergency of his one and only belt breaking, or when my sinus headache started making me feel a little nauseous - I tried to keep a good attitude, find a reasonable solution (borrowing a belt from the Man and eating some breakfast - in case you were curious), and look at the bright side.

And there were some bright sides.  Like... sneaking a few extra morning kisses from the Man before he left for work, seeing the beautiful morning sky after dropping the male offspring off at the bus, and some grand baby snuggles.

So, here's to a positive attitude!  Have a great Wednesday, y'all...

Three Things: I Do Every Day

Many of us are creatures of habit - even if we don't realize it.  I am sure there are certain things you do everyday.  Things you do in a certain order, or at a certain time.  Those daily habits you may not even think about.  There's something comfortable about the repetition of some activities.  Here are three things I do (pretty much) every day:

1) Make coffee: Seriously... First thing.  Every single morning.  Don't even try to talk to me until I have made and had at least a few sips of my first cup of coffee.  Does this really come as a surprise to anyone who knows anything about me?

2)  Spend some quiet time with Jesus:  Right after I fix that cup of coffee.  Just me and God having a little coffee talk over my Bible and devotionals.  I can certainly tell a difference in how my day seems to go on the mornings I skip this!

3)  Read: OK, again... if you know anything at all about me this is not surprising new.  I read every chance I get.  A day is not a day unless I get some reading done!  And I can't go to sleep without reading at least a few pages.  It's how I unwind and relax into sleep mode.

Three Things: I Use Everyday...

1)"Prayer Basket":

The space where I have my morning devotional time can change from one spot to another depending on what is happening in the house at any given time.  That's why I created this sort of "prayer closet" in a basket!  It contains my devotional Bible, my journals, pens, index cards and notecards.  Add my item #2 and I'm all ready for my quiet time each morning...

2) Nook:

I resisted the idea of an e-reader at first.  I'm a BOOK reader.  I love the feel of a book in my hand, the feel of the spine giving the first time you open a new book, turning the pages. But now I am completely sold on my Nook tablet!  Being able to carry all. those. books. with you wherever you go?  Add the ability to check email, google something, waste time on Pinterest, or play a game. I think I might be lost without it now!

3)  Home coffee station:

Complete with Keurig and all the required coffee essentials (K-cups, coffee mugs, sweetener, etc)  And if you have been reading this blog for a while - you know how much I love me some coffee. This area of my dining room gets plenty of use every day!

What three things do you use every day?

Warmer Mornings

I am so excited to see the calendar telling me that it is Spring. (even though it hasn’t exactly felt like it on most days yet) Spring means warmer days. Warmer mornings.

I look forward to taking my morning quiet time outside onto the back porch. Just me, a cup of coffee, and my Bible. Oh… and the morning sun, the birds, and the spring breeze.

New Every Morning

As the mornings have gotten cooler, I have missed sitting on my back porch in the mornings for my quiet time.

Sitting out there in those early morning hours, it's easy to see the hand print of God.

"They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." ~ Lamentations 3:23

You can see his work in the trees, the sunlight, the birds coming to the feeder.

You can hear it in the breeze, the bird songs, the soft clucking of the chickens.

Sometimes I can even feel His Spirit here with me.

God makes Himself known to us in subtle ways.

He is always all around us - with us.  We just have to stop, look, and listen to feel Him there.

"Be still, and know that I am God" ~ Psalm 46:10
