You Can Quote Me

The Day 2 assignment for the 31 Day Blog Challenge was "Favorite Quotes".  I had every intention of skipping this one.  You see, I love quotes.  So many quotes.  Asking me to pick a favorite quote is like asking me to pick a favorite book - just about impossible.  However, as I thought about it, I decided I didn't have to choose favorites.  I only had to select a few to share on this particular occasion.  So, here ya go.  A day late, but completed all the same ...  enjoy!!

Three Things: I love to quote

I love quotations.  Seriously...  From Bible verses - to books and movies - and right on to quotes by "famous' people.  I adore a good quote or saying.   I wasn't even sure I could narrow it down to just three to share with you for this post.  Instead of trying to pick three favorites, or figure out what three I quote most often - I decided just to go with the first three that came to mind while I was typing.  This the result

Three Things I Love to Quote

1)  Joshua 1.9 - "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

This is my personal verse for the year.  (as you may recall - My one word is "Fearless") It has gotten me through some very discouraging times in the past 9 months.

2)  Maya Angelou -  "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel"3

Just Write

I've got the reading part down.  I read.  A lot.  With no end in sight.  It's the "write a lot" thing that has been lacking. 

I used to write when I was younger.  Mostly poetry.  Bad poetry.  But there were a few flowers among the weeds.  Every now and then I even ventured into a bit of fiction, or a memoir of sorts. 

I constantly made up stories in my head as I went through my day.  Narrating what I was doing to make it seem more interesting, or creating fictional or fantasy stories to entertain myself while I did more mundane things such as homework, walking to the bus stop, or chores.

As always happens, life moved along.  I found myself with two children to raise and little time for writing.  It was a busy, happy time.  I didn't miss the writing.  I didn't even think about it during those years. 

Now the kids are grown, or mostly grown.  Either way, they are developing lives of their own.  They are no longer dependant on me for every tiny thing, and for every second of the day.  Now, there are spaces.  Spaces that are easy to fill with cleaning, reading, crochet, or a multitude of other activities. 

Such as writing.

I find myself thinking about writing.  Thinking about putting pen to paper.  Looking for writing prompts and exercises.  Making up bits and pieces of stories as I do dishes, laundry, or driving in the car. 

Writing is now something I want to do.  A drive to bring words to life.  Perhaps it was always there, and the blogging has just helped to breathe new life into it.

I've made myself a promise to write everyday.  For this purpose, blogging doesn't count.  Real, honest to goodness, pen to paper writing.  It doesn't matter if it's good, bad, boring drivel, or something with potential.  I will write. 

Now I find myself craving a notebook and a stash of pens specifically for writing.  A lovely, journal type notebook. Something of decent size with plenty of blank, lined pages for writing.  And good pens.  Pens that don't leave globs of ink or drag on the paper.   That along with a few words of inspiration, and some time to sit quietly and let my thoughts flow.

The Best of Tim McGraw

I giggled as I typed that title.  I can feel some of my country-music-hating friends cringing already.  And I know a few may not even bother to read this particular blog post.  I also know that some of my country-loving-friends may find themselves disappointed in what is about to follow. 

Let me start at the beginning...

It all started to unravel when The Man of the House and I were at Wally-world the other night.  As you go in there are always displays for movies, video games, and albums soon to be released.  This week there was a display for Tim McGraw's newest album. 

What caught the eye of The Man of the House was a certain quote on the display.  You know how albums, books, etc will often have a little blurb from a critic or another celebrity about the quality of the item in question.  This time the quote was :

"My best album ever!" - Tim McGraw

Wow.  Not best album yet.  Ever. 

This somehow quickly spiralled into a discussion of how one follows that declaration for subsequent albums.  What if the next release is, in fact, better than this one?  Or, how could it possibly be if this is the best EVER?  We came up with the following suggestions...

If the following album is actually even better:
"I was wrong"

"Even better than the best album ever"

"No, really.  This is the best album ever.  I mean it this time"

Of course, those weren't as fun to come up with.  So we spent more time on quotes for the lesser album which will follow the "best album ever":

"Not as good as the last one"

"Damn..."

"I should have saved some of the other songs for this album"

"At least I'm still married to Faith Hill"

"It's an album"

Which should probably be accompanied with a hard learned lesson on critiquing your own work.  ; D
