Surprises

Y'all, I don't even know where to start. Last week was full of surprises.  Some were not so great. Some were welcome surprises. And one or two were... neutral, I guess.

The night before my follow-up appointment for my mammogram, the tooth that is awaiting extraction and an implant BROKE! I was eating, and suddenly felt something not right in the food so I spit it out. There was a piece of my tooth! It didn't hurt or anything, but there was a sharp jagged edge that I could constantly feel rubbing the inside of my cheek. Of course this happened after the office was closed for the day so it had to wait.  Next morning, before I left for the mammography office, I called and they worked me into the schedule for that afternoon.

My mammogram follow-up went pretty well. The calcifications have increased. But the changes are small and since the calcifications are tiny, they want to continue monitoring them for now. I go back in Six months to see if there are any further changes.

The appointment at the dentist was quick and painless. Since the tooth wasn't hurting or sensitive, she ground off the sharp edge to get me through until the appointment for the extraction and graft. I have been instructed to avoid chewing on it as much as possible, especially tough, hard, or crunchy foods.

In other news, our yard is once again a hot bed of wildlife activity.  On at least two mornings we have had a huge wild turkey in our yard.  It is apparently mating season and he is looking to impress the ladies. The first morning he was here, he had two females with him (although they didn't seem to be paying much attention to his efforts woo them).

I was also surprised to discover a white squirrel has started stealing from my bird feeders. I know we have white squirrels in the area. There's a town about 30 minutes from here that is quite proud of its white squirrel population and even has a White Squirrel Festival. But this us the first and only one we have ever seen around our house! It's been here for three mornings in a row, so I think maybe it's going to stick around.

Have you experienced any interesting surprises recently?

NOT A Hard Boiled Egg

Perhaps someone did it on purpose because they thought it would be funny.

Or maybe the carton currently being filled was topped out and someone was just too lazy to get out another one, so they just found the first carton with an empty space and use it.

Maybe someone just didn't care which was the freshest, currently being filled carton and just grabbed one and stuck an egg into it.

Whatever the circumstances were, they led to this.

This morning, I pulled out my stash of hard boiled eggs to shell a couple of them for my breakfast.  The first one cracked as usual and peeled easily.  The second cracked easily - and began to seep raw egg all over my fingers and the napkin I was peeling over.  That was NOT a hard boiled egg.

To say the least - it took me by surprise.  To be more accurate, I was frustrated and annoyed due to a) the waste of a perfectly good egg, and b) having to clean up the mess.

Who Threw Away The Opossum?

Yesterday morning, the Man of the House noticed something was amiss in the garage.  The recycling bins were a bit askew.  And the lid was off one of the big trash bins.  Which appeared to have no bag in it.  Although he knew he had put fresh bags in after his last trip to the recycling center.  Odd...

Perhaps the bag slipped off and was down inside the can.  He took a look-see.  Yep, there it was.  Along with another little surprise.

A opossum had somehow gotten down into the trashcan!  And was now trapped there.  Best guess is that it was messing around the recycling and trash, found the lid loose or off, and in the process of investigating the bin, fell inside only to be trapped by the high walls.  Who knows how long it had been there?  I personally am amazed that it didn't raise enough of a fuss to alert us that something was messing with the trash!

Now, how to get it out??  The Man of the House dragged the trash bin out into the back yard, stood behind it and tipped it over.  We figured the ugly little marsupial would make a dash as soon as possible.  Wrong!  It stayed tucked inside the trash can.  Until The Man of the House picked up the bottom and dumped it out onto the grass.

At this point it did finally attempt to make a mad dash - right back toward the garage!  The Man of the House had to place himself between the beastie and the garage door and shoo it away from the house.  And all the while I am having fleeting images of him being attacked by this creature and ending up needing rabies treatments.

Fortunately when it realized the human male was in the way, it changed course and waddled off down the yard and into the ditch by the road.  Hopefully never to be seen again.

Although it has left me wondering - Are opossums recyclable?
