When You Choke on Your Salad

Last night I choked on a piece of apple in my salad...

It wasn't as bad as it could have been.  I was able to breath the whole time.  But that little chunk of honeycrisp was wedged right between my tonsils for a good minute or two and didn't want to move.  Although finally... finally... I managed to cough and clear and swallow it down.  It's all good.

Or is it?

Shortly after clearing the apple my throat started hurting.  Right at the back, behind my tonsils.  Right where that piece of apple had tried to set up shop.  It was very irritated and scratchy. Drank some cold water, ate some yogurt and figured it would be gone by morning.

Wrong!

Apparently that choking episode gave me a nice little abrasion back there.  And today it's as sore and scratchy as last night.  Even feels a little swollen.  You know.. like when your tonsils are swollen.  You don't know?  Well trust me.. I've had enough strep throat and tonsillitis in my life to know... and this is what swollen tonsils feel like.

I swallowed a spoonful of honey - which helped a little.  For a very short time.  Now I am sipping some warm tea with plenty of honey in it.  And I might have someone bring me an icy drink.  (I'm thinking frapp, milk shake, or slushy)

I Should Blog About This

I've been doing some deep thinking recently.  And some not-so-deep thinking also.  As I find myself buried inside my head I often think "I should write/blog about this"

Then the moment passes.

And it's gone.  The thoughts I was thinking.  Vanished.  Like so much smoke in the air.  Leaving me with the knowledge that at some point I had a great idea.  But now it's not even a memory.

Which is just so frustrating!

It happens with dreams also.  I wake from a dream, realizing I should write about whatever it was I was just dreaming.  Then I fall back asleep.  By morning whatever it was which was so brilliant, so witty, so meaningful - has withdrawn back into my subconscious.  Never to be recovered.

I would have way more posts written (and probably be far more entertaining) if I just remember all the great stuff I come up with when I am not anywhere around the computer!

One Question

This week I find myself pondering this one extremely important question:

photo: publicdomainpictures.net

Now that Labor Day has come and gone ...  September is under way... and Fall is officially just around the corner - that means I can now wear my boots without getting any funny looks.  Right?  Riiiight??

I know, many people are trying to hang on and savor these last few weeks of summer.  But man, oh man - I am ready for some cooler weather.   Which means skirts and boots y'all!!

What (if anything) has you looking forward to Fall?

"It Is Finished"

In a world constantly demanding our time, our attention, our busyness - it is a comfort to hear the words of Jesus upon the cross.  "It is finished"  There is nothing we have to do to earn love.  To earn salvation.  To earn grace and mercy.  It is done.

Three Things: I could read over and over again

I'm known to be a bit of a reader.  (I'm also known to understate things a tiny bit from time to time)

Reading has been a HUGE part of my life ever since I was a kid.  I love to lose myself in a good book.  I would spend most of my days reading - all day, every day if that were actually possible.  (wait... is there a job for that? If anyone has an opening with a job description like that - let me know!  'Cause I would totally rock that!)

I always say I don't like to answer questions about my favorite books.  It's just too hard to pick a favorite book.  I have loved so many different ones over the years.  And yet... here I am writing a post about three things I could read over and over.  Painting myself into a corner of sorts.  Because honestly, there are probably hundreds of books I would read again.  And there are quite a few I have read twice - or more - in my lifetime.  These are simply three that came to mind:

1) The Time Traveler's Wife (by Audrey Niffenegger): There aren't many books I can say made me cry.  Real, tears running down my cheeks, heart aching kind of cry.  But this one did. The story is just so beautiful.  And so sad.  The day I finished the book, I closed it, and immediately thought..."Yes.  That book would be on my Top Ten list"  When I first read it, I had a borrowed library copy.  I had to go buy my own to keep!

2) Unglued (by Lysa TerKeurst): Just being real here... I probably NEED to read this book over and over.  And over again.  This is a fantastic book about breaking the habits of stuffing down our emotions, or letting them explode all over ourselves and others.  Controlling your emotions instead of letting them control you.  And having more godly reactions to circumstances and other people.  When I read the first page, I was pretty sure Mrs TerKeurst had been sneaking around spying on my family!

3) To Kill A Mockingbird (by Lee Harper): I mean because, c'mon.. it's To.Kill. A. Mockingbird.  This is one of those novels I have probably read at least 5 times.  I love the story.  I love the movie.  It's a classic!

And because I just HAVE to do it: Honorable mentions would go to "Gone With the Wind", "Island of the Blue Dolphins", "The Great Gatsby", "The Other Boleyn Girl", "One Thousand Gifts", "Charlotte's Web", "A Thousand Splendid Suns"... and so many others!!

Ten Questions

I want to thank Michelle at New Horizon Reviews for tagging my blog for the Liebster Award!

I typically don't do many 'tag - you're it' type posts on here.  But...
1) I liked her questions and wanted to answer them. (except for one... you'll see...)
And
2) I always seem to need some good writing prompts these days!

So... here we go!

(1) What made you start a blog?

um... good question!  I've always liked to write and I think I just saw it as a place to express myself. An online journal of sorts. It has just sort of grown and developed over the years.
(2) What is one tip you would offer a new blogger?

Don't be afraid to hit the publish button no matter what you wrote. Your blog doesn't have to be just like anyone else.  It's yours.  Your thoughts, your platform, your writing.  Be yourself.

(3) Where does your blogging inspiration come from?

God... my family... life... every moment
(4) What do you like best about blogging?

Having an outlet for some of the thoughts that roll around in my head all day.  #2 favorite thing is comments from readers.  I loooove comments!!
(5) Are you a morning person? Why/Why not?

No!  I would be an early to bed, late to rise kinda gal if I could.  But I do make myself get up before the sun on most mornings so I can have some quiet time before the busyness of the day gets in the way.
(6) Who has the biggest influence on you? Why?

Other than God?  That would have to be the Man of the House.  He is always there for me. He is kind, giving, and compassionate.  He's strong.  He has an amazing work ethic.  I admire him and wish I could be more like him sometimes. He supports all my crazy dreams and encourages me to go for them.  He comforts me when I feel like I'm falling flat on my face.  And he makes me feel beautiful.
(7) What is your favorite book?

Nope.  Just no.  I can't do it.  This is one of my very least favorite questions in the history of questions.  Ever.   I love books.  So many books.  I can't possible pick just one as my favorite.  That would be like picking a favorite offspring.

(8) What is the first book you remember reading?

"The Three Little Pigs"  Which happens to be the first book I ever read by myself.  I was in kindergarten - which at that time was optional, so they didn't start teaching reading until first grade.  But I kept begging and begging my teacher to let me read, so she hooked me up.  I still remember how proud I was of myself for reading "straw"  because that is a very hard word when you are just starting out!

(9) How do you feel about print books versus e-books?

I like the convenience of e-books.  Being able to carry as many as I want with me in one lightweight device.  Lovely!  But nothing will ever replace print books for me.  Holding the book, feeling the spine give for the first time, turning the pages.  The BEST!
(10) What is your favorite piece of furniture? Why?

My bed.  Because that's where I sleep.  And read.

And thats about that.  (Michelle, I hope you will forgive me if I don't tag other bloggers and pass this on!)
