Thankful Thursday - April 29, 2021

Days like today make it easy to feel grateful.  The sun is shining.  The temperatures are warm and there's a pleasant breeze blowing.  My family is healthy.  Yep.  Life is good.  The thing is to hold onto those moments and remember them when things don't feel quite so wonderful.  To recall that even in those times of difficulty - life is still good and there is still something to be thankful for.

What are you thankful for this week?

Go Outside!

If you're over a certain age, it's a safe bet that when you were a kid and started driving your mom crazy, you were probably ordered to "Go outside and play!"

I remember spending hours and hours outside as a kid.  Riding bikes, roller skating, climbing trees, rolling down hills, playing barbies on the front porch, playing house under the big oak tree, reading on the back deck, and making daisy chains.  We even used to beg to be allowed to eat our lunch as a "picnic" in the backyard.

I'm not sure exactly when I outgrew that love of being out of doors.  Maybe as a teenager.  Probably because I was too worried about the wind messing up my hair or because I would rather be inside listening to music or watching television.  (this was before the days of cell phones, tablets, and wifi)

This spring I have been rediscovering the joy of the great outdoors.  If the weather is over 60 degrees and not rainy or too windy - I get out onto the back porch where I crochet,  eat lunch, work all the online stuff I do for my Etsy shop, eat my lunch, or just sit and read. In fact, I'm sitting out here right now writing this blog post!

My view while I write this post

I have a little table, complete with a patio umbrella - because this gal gets a sunburn in the blink of an eye. There are several bird feeders, including one for the hummingbirds, and I love when a feathered friend drops by for a snack while I'm out here.  And of course my windchimes.

The dogs are also enjoying all the outside time.  They love napping in the sunshine.  And barking at anyone that might pass by while out for a walk.  (sorry about that to all my neighbors!)

I suppose at some time in the not-so-distant future the temperatures or the pollen count will get high enough to drive me back inside.  But, for now, I am enjoying as much time out here as possible.

Do you enjoy spending time outside?

Thankful Thursday - April 22, 2021

Yesterday was ROUGH.  I received my second dose of the Covid vaccine on Tuesday.  On Wednesday I was dealing with some side effects. A little fatigue and my arm was very sore, but mostly some body aches.

It wasn't fun, but this means that the vaccine was doing exactly what it is supposed to do and my body is creating lots of antibodies.  And I am so thankful for that.  I am also thankful that the worst if it seems to have passed. And I am thankful that soon I will be able to spend time with and even hug some people I have had to stay away from for the past year!!

What are you thankful for this week?

How Sweet It Isn't

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I was talking about needing to improve my health to get the numbers for my blood work under control and I said I needed to get my blood sugar managed before it becomes a "real problem"?

Well, after hearing from my doctor - it turns out that it already IS a real problem.  Apparently, my A1C levels put me in the official range of "pre-diabetes".

Ugh... This makes all those life changes mentioned before even that much more important.

So, what's a gal to do when she hears the dreaded word "pre-diabetes"?

If you're like me, you start with educating yourself and that's when you realize that with some simple changes, you can improve your numbers and avoid moving on to Type 2 Diabetes.

Here are some tips to help improve your A1C number:

Increase Your Activity Level:  Regular exercise including both cardio/aerobic exercise and strength or resistance training significantly improve your insulin resistance and manage your blood sugar levels by triggering the muscles to pull sugar from the bloodstream.  (Confession: this is still something I need to work on)

Adjust Your Diet: Some things such as sugary drinks and treats are going to need to be avoided.  You should focus on eating lean proteins and fresh produce.  Carbohydrates should be rich in fiber and nutrients (think brown rice, whole grains, and quinoa) and should be paired with protein and some healthy fat.  This causes the energy from the food to be released more slowly and decreases spikes in blood sugar.

Invest in some good measuring cups and spoons, and a kitchen scale if you don't have these.  Portion sizes matter. When you eat more food than your body needs - blood sugar levels increase.

Meal Planning:  Planning meals in advance make you less likely to skip meals, go too long without eating, or grab the most convenient option - which all too often turns out to be something calorie-dense, nutrient-poor, and high carbohydrate.

Obviously - if your doctor recommends medication or regular glucose monitoring - do it! Fortunately, I am not yet at a point where my doctor has suggested these. And by sticking to the plan that's now in place - I hope to avoid them altogether.

Have you ever been told that your blood sugar or A1C levels were too high?  What steps did you take to get your numbers under control?  Share in the comments!

Thankful Thursday - April 8, 2021

This past week was tough. I received a call that on my regular screening image they had seen some calcification, requiring me to go back for more imaging. I had a sore throat that sent me to the doctor, and then later in the week when I felt even worse -  had me testing for Covid.  It was one of those weeks when it was very easy to start wallowing in negativity and self pity.

That's when gratitude can be especially helpful.  I am thankful for regular screenings that spotted the concerning areas.  I am thankful that what they are seeing isn't serious enough to require a biopsy or other tests at this time and I just have to follow up in a few months to check for any changes. I am thankful that the Covid test I took was negative and I just had a regular ol' virus causing tonsillitis.

Like they say: there's always something to be thankful for! What are you thankful for this week?

Currently... April 2021

It's nice to see April again - isn't it? The daffodils are in bloom, trees are starting to get their leaves, and the tulips are preparing to put on a show of their own.  I am enjoying the afternoons when I can have the windows open wide to welcome the fresh air.

The results of my March challenges were a mixed bag.  I can't say that I reached my next weight loss goal, but if I stick with my WW plan and start taking care to reduce my cholesterol and A1C levels, I expect that to improve also.

I've been (mostly) doing a nail care routine.  But I don't think my cuticles care for the oils I have been using to moisturize and nourish them, because they seem to be just as snagged and peeling as before.  I think I may need to switch to a cuticle cream, either alone or layered under the oil for some extra moisturizing goodness.

I have made some nice progress cleaning out and reorganizing my home office.  It's taking a little longer than I expected, but I am keeping at it and hope to have it completed before the end of April.

What else am I up to as April begins?  Well, since you asked...

Working on:  Making plans and taking steps to improve my overall health.  If you saw my post last week, you know that I got a wake-up call after my yearly physical and I'm in the process of making some changes to correct the problems I am facing.

Celebrating:  Easter. My youngest sister's birthday. (and hopefully accomplishing a few goals)

Loving:  As I mentioned before, I am enjoying the mild Spring weather.  Warm afternoons with the windows open and hanging out with the pups while they lounge in the sun on the back porch.  (they're loving the warm weather also)

Wanting/Needing: Some tasty recipes for more plant-based meals. Got some? Send 'em my way!

Reading:  I just started reading D-Day Girls: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win World War II  by Sarah Rose.

Challenges for April:

  • Finish cleaning out and reorganizing home office
  • Take advantage of the warmer weather with daily walks
  • Reach next weight loss goal
What are your plans and goals for April?
