Incredible Patience

Shopping is not the favorite activity for The Man of the House.  He's a "go in - get what you need/want - get out" sort of shopper. Which doesn't work well when you know in a general way what you are looking for, but having trouble finding what it is specifically that you need.  It's a form of torture for him.

Case in point - cafe curtains for the kitchen.

I knew I wanted cafe curtains.  I even thought I had them picked out and purchased.  Until I got home and realized that actually measuring the window and making sure the curtains you are purchasing are, in fact, the right size for that particular window.

I had not. They were too long.  (sigh)  This is a brief synopsis of what occurred next...

Return previously purchased curtains.  Search curtain selection at store where previous curtains were purchased.  Realize they carry nothing close to the size I actually need. Leave store frustrated.

Plan to browse Target and World Market websites for potential new curtains.  Internet is down all evening and the following morning. Decide to just go check stores.

Have Man of the House take me to shopping plaza to participate in the hunt for curtains.  Look in first store, find nothing.  Look through shoe department instead.

Look at second store.  Find nothing.  Form potential new idea in mind.

Drag Man of House into another store.  Still nothing.  He wanders off to look at grills.  Finding none, he comes back.  Only to be told we will have to go to yet another store.

Store number 4.  Nope.

Store number 5.  Again, a bust.  Ponder possible new idea which began brain brewing earlier.  Get a stroke of pure genius.  Which requires returning to store number 2 to purchase item to be used as curtains.  It also requires a stop at the store where the first curtains were bought and  returned for clips to complete the new project.

And... Voila!  Using napkins found at World Market - new cafe curtains!!

Through it all, the Man of House was incredibly patient with me.  Seriously, I could learn a thing or two from him on the subject.  I probably would have been snapping out somewhere around store 3 or 4.  Absolutely by the time we had to return to store 2.  But not him - he was an absolute model of self control and understanding.

Especially considering that later the same day he must have had enough of listening to me complain about my feed aching all the time - because he took me back out to get new shoes.  I was being picky.  ( Is it too much to ask for some cute, comfortable shoes with plenty of cushioning which will go with most any outfit??)  Which meant going to 3 more stores in order to find just the right pair to cradle my feet in comfort.

Thanks sweetie!  I know all that walking around and shopping isn't your cup of tea.  I appreciate you doing it for me.  And for being patient with me in the process!

Miss Me?

Miss me?  Even notice I was gone?  Ha!  That's what I thought!  It's OK.  That's exactly how I intended it!

The Man of the House and I headed over the mountain to Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge for a three day weekend of anniversary fun.  Grown ups only.  Did all sorts of touristy stuff.  Took dozens and dozens of pictures.

That's right... Three days worth of blog fodder.

Stay tuned!!  Exciting trip posts to come!

Take Out

I'm not an easy person to live with.

Not all the time.  (I hope)   Sometimes I am perfectly delightful.  (at least I think so)  But!  When I get stressed.  When I am upset about something.  When I am over tired.  When I am hormonal. When I feel sick.  Or just feel out of sorts. Well, that's a different story.

Just ask The Man of the House.  He takes the weight of my moods most of the time.  Even though most of the time he is not the cause of the grumpy state I am in at the moment.

I get snippy.  I pout.  I snap out at him over any little thing.  I give him the cold shoulder.

Yes, I know what you are thinking... what a lucky, lucky guy! (Not!)

Why do I do that?  If anyone else treated him that way it would make me very angry.  What makes me feel that it's OK to treat him as if he is the cause of whatever is bothering me?

I'm not proud of this.  I want to change.

He deserves my love and respect.  Honor and encouragement.  Not to be punished for my bad temper toward someone else, or because I didn't get enough rest or the whims of my monthly cycle.  He's not my personal emotional punching bag.

1 Corinthians 13:5 says of love: "It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful" (ESV)

That is going to be my focus verse as I start trying to break this pattern.

This week I am going to start trying to be aware when I am feeling one of the ways that causes me to act this way toward him.  And to recognize the behaviour when I start doing it and to stop it right then.  To pray about it.

(And honey - if you are reading this: you have my full permission to gently remind me if I do start behaving this way!)

Thankful Thursday: September 27

Thursday is the day when I pause to take a few minutes and just soak in all the blessings which have been poured over me during the past week.

This week I am thankful for:

The Man of the House: For bringing me Nyquil, lotion tissues, and ginger ale when I was sick with a head cold earlier this week.

My "Baby" Sister:  Who sent me a gift card to my favorite bookstore because she was thinking about me wanted to make me smile! (which actually made me cry a little - in a good way)

The Grand baby:  Because no matter how grumpy I am or worn out I feel, he makes me smile and laugh every single day

What are you thankful for?  Please share in the comments section.  OR - even better: write your own "Thankful Thursday" post and share the link in the comments.  And I would also be very thankful if you also included a mention and a link back to this blog somewhere in your post.

Seven Days Without Coffee: Is Off To A Rough Start

In case you were wondering, lack of coffee has not killed me (yet). And on an even more positive note: I have not yet killed anyone else either.   I had a lovely pot of English Breakfast tea this morning, while the siren song of the coffee brewing for the Man of the House called out to me.   As I left the house, my travel mug was full of chamomile.  It wasn't bad.  It also wasn't coffee.

However, I'm only this far into day one, and I have learned a couple of important lessons.
Lesson One: Never, ever... seriously I mean NEVER... start a coffee detox on the morning you have to get up extra early to go do mind-numbing volunteer work.  Seriously, if there was ever a task that needed a caffeine jolt it is stuffing info/goodie bags and rolling forks into napkins before 9am.

Lesson Two: On the first day of your coffee detox, do not under any circumstances make a run into the grocery store with the Starbucks counter right at the entrance.

Right now I have a nagging thumping behind my left eyebrow.  I'm starting to feel extremely run down and tired.  And my shoulders are getting tight. I believe this is a signal to sit down and have another cup of tea.  Something caffeinated.

Thankful Thursday: September 6

An attitude of gratitude.  Living in a state of thankfulness.  Whatever you want to call it - it can change your outlook on life.  "We would worry less if we praised more. Thanksgiving is the enemy of discontent and dissatisfaction" ~ Harry A. Ironside

This week I am thankful for:
  • Freshman Year:  The little man is only 1 1/2 weeks into high school, and I'm already seeing an improvement in his attitude towards school and the effort he is putting into it!  I'm praying it lasts.
  • The Man of the House: He's handsome.  He's handy (remind me to tell you about the new mailbox post he made for us!).  He's caring and supportive. And he's all mine!!
  • Flexible Friends:  We were supposed to attend the Apple Festival last weekend with some friends.  The weather had different plans, pouring rain complete with thunder and lightening.  After sitting in a Walgreen's parking lot hoping it would pass over - plans were changed to a game of bowling and some ice cream after.  A good time was had by all.

Thankful Thursday: July 12

If I had to write this yesterday, it would have been a challenge.  Yesterday was one of those stressful, overwhelmed, feeling in-over-my-head kind of days.  Fortunately, today seems to have dawned clearer and calmer.  And I can see the blessings before me:

A Patient and Supportive Husband! While I was at my wit's end yesterday, he was my rock!  He was my calm in the storm.  And he even made a run to the store at 9pm to pick up more printer ink for me.

A Break in the Heat Wave After way too many days of near 100 degree temperatures, we are finally enjoying a break to the heat and a little rain for the veggie plants!

Two Orders for Queen B's Busy Work This past week brought two custom orders for Queen B's Busy Work!

Jumping Into July

July is here.  And baby, it's HOT outside!  Which leaves plenty of time for inside activities and making lists of things I want to get accomplished.  Along that line of thought, let me share with you my

Goals for July:

  1. Get out on to the back deck in the mornings to enjoy some coffee, reading, and fresh air - before the day gets too hot.
  2. Take at least one hour of time for myself each week.  Give myself a pedi, take a bubble bath, etc.
  3. Continue feeding the family healthier, less processed foods.
  4. Start creating a list of back to school/autumn type items for Queen B's Busy Work
  5. Complete "About" page for Queen B's Busy Work
  6. Do some writing. Not blog stuff - fiction or poetry.
  7. Make time for a Date Night with the man of the house.  (or even better - an entire date day!)
  8. Start some canning and/or freezing!
  9. Take at least one photograph per day.
  10. Get back on track with household chores.

And Now For Something Completely Different

It's July!  JULY!

How in the world is it July already? And where exactly did June disappear to?  How is one entire half of this year past and gone already?  Hmm.  Well, I must be having fun; because time certainly is flying!

Trying a few new things for July...

Goals:  Listed here on the blog.  Maybe weekly, definitely for the month  With a followup post at the end of the month (week) telling how I did meeting those goals.

The Week In Pictures:  I'm going to try to snap a picture or two every day and on Fridays share them in a "The Week in Pictures" post.

Counting My Blessings:  A weekly post listing at least 3 blessing I'm thankful for that week.  And it can't always just be the same old "I'm thankful for my husband and my kids".  Everyone knows I am thankful for the man of the house and our offspring.  It has to be more specific than that!

I still can't believe it's already July... man.. It's going to be Christmas before we know it!

Fathers

I am fortunate to have some remarkable fathers in my life.  Both my own father, and the Man of the House (aka: father of my children).

I don't think I could ever tell the Man of the House exactly how much I appreciate all he does for myself and our family. To provide for us. The way he always seems to put us first. He's kind and loving, but firm when he needs to be. He's good with things around the house - from yard work to fixing things to building things.  He's smart. Smarter than he knows, I think. I admire the way he can play with the kids, and be silly around with them. And the way he leads our family. I thank God everyday for chosing him to be my husband!

Growing up, I always knew my dad was a hardworker. He still is, even though he's retired.  (If retired means still working part time during the summers, and working tirelessly on his home and yard)   He always seemed like the quiet, provide for the family and keep the kids in line sort of guy growing up.  But I have learned to appreciate a whole different side of him as an adult.  He loves to tell stories.  And growing up a Navy kid, he has some great ones.  Who knew my dad was also a funny guy?  I love that about him.  He's a good grandpa.  (and now a great grandpa!)

Some women aren't fortunate to have even one great man in their life. How blessed am I to have two?

With Actions and Truth

I'm cross-posting between my other blog and here because I am just too tired to think creatively enough to come up with two separate posts today.  I apologize for rmy laziness...

Today The Man of the House, The Little Man, and myself went with our small group from church to work on a service project. Our church sponsers days like this a few times a year, (known as "Love Loud" projects) for members to go out into the community and be of service to others.

We each did various chores including weeding and weed eating, hauled garbage, assembled a grill, spread some mulch, power washing, and assorted repair work.

It was a great experience. And exhausting.

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth ~ 1 John 3:18

Creativity and Cupcakes

As you read this, there is a trip to the grocery store in my very very near future.

For baking supplies.

Because for whatever reason, the Princess and I are in a creative mood today.

Perhaps it's the sun shining, the breeze blowing the warm wind through the open windows, the sound of the birds chirping, and the sense of spring in the air that has our creative spirits soaring.  Maybe it's that we have watched one too many episodes of Cupcake Wars or Cake Boss recently.  Maybe it's hormones.  Maybe it's a driving need to use up some of the almost 5 dozen eggs sitting in the fridge; complements of The Girls.  Whatever the reason, we have been talking cupcakes all morning and are now ready to get down to baking.

The timing is perfect.  The Man of the House and the Little Man have "man plans" this evening.  (A navy seal-shoot 'em up- testosteroney movie they have been wanting to see)  .  And we have company coming into town this weekend to sample the goods and assure they all get eaten.

So, we give in to the urge.  We make our plans.   We make our list.  And - we wait for the Little Guy to finish eating so we can go to the store.
